Zach Parise is one of the Devils’ two alternate captains (Patrik Elias is the other), so, while he is out for the next three months recovering from surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, coach John MacLean has to give the second “A” to another player. Ilya Kovalchuk wore it for the second consecutive game Wednesday in Chicago and MacLean said the plan “for right now” is for Kovalchuk to continue to wear it.
MacLean said he did not give the “A” to Kovalchuk to try to motivate him.
“I feel he deserves it,” MacLean said. “He cares about his team and he gives an honest effort when he’s out there.”
