“AS ILYA KOVALCHUK let out a week’s worth of frustration with a scream, hats rained down on the ice at the Rock. The Devils newly acquired left wing had scored only one goal, but it was his first as a Devil, a rare third one on Friday for the slumping Devils and the game-winner in a 5-2 win over the Predators in front of a sold-out crowd in Newark.
Afterward, Kovalchuk said he owed the fans a few more goals for the tribute usually reserved for a three-goal night.
“Maybe next time I get a hat trick for them,” Kovalchuk said. “But this one felt really good.”
