The Saskatoon Blades have tied a franchise record with their 13th consecutive victory following a 5-1 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday night.
The Blades got some key saves from Andrey Makarov early in the 3rd period before pulling away and scoring 4 times in the frame for the record-tying win.
For the second straight game, the Blades came from behind and won despite giving up the opening goal. Moose Jaw tallied first in period one as Tanner Eberle scored at 17:51, netting his 13th of the year. Saskatoon pushed back before the period was out, as Erik Benoit snapped one high glove side at 18:25 after a nice pass from Collin Valcourt. The shots were 9-8 for Saskatoon through 20 minutes.
There was no scoring in the second period, despite there being 6 penalties in the period and a number of powerplay situations. Neither team took advantage of it as Saskatoon outshot the Warriors 14-12 in the frame thanks to a late flurry offensively.
The Warriors had some good chances on Saskatoon early in the third period but Andrey Makarov stood tall. He made some key saves until the Blades took the lead for the first time at 9:22. That’s when Matej Stransky banged home a rebound for his 33rd of the season. Then, 33 seconds later the Blades struck again as Josh Nicholls scored off the rush after a great pass from Nathan Burns. Saskatoon then made it a 4-1 game after Brenden Walker stripped the puck from Sam Fioretti in the neutral zone and then hit the open net to seal it. Walker added one more for good measure on the PP late to make it a 5-1 final.
Darren Dietz ended the game with 3 assists while Stransky and Walker both netted two point games.
Andrey Makarov was the first star of the game after a 35 save performance.
On the powerplay, Saskatoon ended up 1 for 6 while going 6 for 6 on the PK.
